Why Your LandCruiser's Suspension Wears Out Faster Than the Brochure Says
When Toyota publishes recommended service intervals for the 79 Series or 200 Series, they're writing for average conditions. Average roads. Average loads. Average temperatures. Alice Springs is not average.
I see LandCruisers come in with suspension wear that you'd expect after 150,000km of suburban driving — but they've only done 60,000km, most of it up here.
What Corrugations Actually Do to Shock Absorbers
Corrugated roads are a suspension killer. It's not dramatic — it's constant. Every corrugation delivers a rapid compression-and-rebound cycle through the shock absorber. At highway speed on a badly corrugated dirt road, you can be hitting 8–10 cycles per second.
Each cycle generates heat inside the shock absorber as the oil passes through the valving. Sustained heat breaks down the oil, causes foaming, and reduces the shock's ability to control movement. Once that happens, you're not just getting a rough ride — the tyre is spending more time off the ground, less time in contact with the road surface.
Signs Your Suspension Is Done
The vehicle wanders on the highway — has to be corrected constantly. Nose dives sharply under braking — front shocks not controlling weight transfer. Rough ride on smooth bitumen — shocks no longer damping correctly. Body rolls excessively in corners — losing control of lateral movement.
Lifted Vehicles — Extra Caution Required
A lot of Cruisers up here are lifted. A quality lift with the right components, set up correctly, can actually improve outback durability. But a cheap lift, or a lift that's been on the vehicle for years without attention, can make wear worse. Geometry changes from a lift put extra stress on ball joints, CV joints, and tie rod ends.
Check It Before the Trip, Not After
Every year I see vehicles limp back to Alice Springs after a big trip with suspension issues that were developing before they left. A pre-trip suspension inspection takes a few hours. A breakdown 200km out costs a lot more than that.
Book a pre-trip suspension check before your next big run.
