What Corrugations Do to Your 4WD Suspension

September 2, 2026

What corrugations actually do to your vehicle

When your tyre hits a corrugation at speed, the shock absorber compresses to absorb the impact. If your shocks are even slightly worn, the full impact goes into your suspension mounts, control arm bushes, and ultimately your chassis.

The components that fail first

Shock absorbers: A shock that has done 40,000 kilometres around Alice Springs is at half life. On corrugations, a tired shock fades within minutes.

Control arm and panhard rod bushes: The rubber separates from the metal sleeve, allowing movement that throws out your alignment.

Steering rack and tie rod ends: Even a millimetre of play turns a corrugation impact into a steering input.

Shock absorber mounting points: On heavily loaded tourers, the top mount cracks from repeated impact loading.

Winter is harder on suspension than summer

In summer, corrugations are cut into softer dirt. In winter, the ground is packed hard — the corrugations are effectively solid ridges. This is why we see more suspension failures in July and August than in January.

What to check before a trip

  • Bounce test each corner — it should rise once and stop
  • Check for leaks — look at the shock body for wet oil residue
  • Inspect bushes — cracking, perishing, or separation means replacement
  • Listen for clunks — drive slowly over a speed hump with the windows down

The Finke factor

The race crews spend thousands on suspension designed specifically for those corrugations, and they still break things. For the rest of us, the lesson is the same: suspension degrades gradually and you will not notice until you are on a dirt road.

When to book a suspension check

If your 4WD has done more than 30,000 kilometres of Territory driving, get the suspension inspected. Book a suspension inspection at Smart Offroad Mechanical.
