The Pre-Trip Checklist: What I Look at Before You Head Bush

May 10, 2026

I've seen it too many times. A vehicle that seemed "fine" when it left Alice Springs, broken down 200km out on a dirt track with no phone signal and a family on board. Nine times out of ten, the warning signs were there. They just hadn't been looked at.

A pre-trip inspection isn't a luxury. Up here, it's standard practice if you take outback driving seriously.

The Checklist

DPF Status — For diesel vehicles, I check DPF soot load via live diagnostics. A filter that's at 70–80% capacity before you leave isn't going to clear itself on a highway run.

Air Filter — In Alice Springs, I recommend inspecting the air filter every 2,500km. On a big trip on dirt roads, you might cover that in a few days. A blocked air filter chokes the engine and accelerates DPF loading.

Engine Oil — Level and Condition — Check the level, but also smell it and look at it. If the oil smells like diesel or the level has risen, that's fuel dilution — a serious issue requiring attention before you go anywhere remote.

Brakes — Pad thickness, rotor condition, caliper function. Brake fluid moisture test if it's been more than two years.

Shock Absorbers and Suspension Joints — Check for leaking shocks, worn ball joints, loose tie rod ends. A suspension failure on a remote track is a long, expensive recovery.

Tyres — Tread depth (minimum 3mm for outback — I'd say don't push below 4mm), tyre pressure including spare, sidewall condition.

Cooling System — Coolant level, coolant colour and condition, hose condition, radiator condition.

Air Conditioning — Does it actually get cold? Does it stay cold? If not, fix it before you leave.

Battery — Load test the battery. A battery that starts fine in the morning can struggle when it's been sitting in 45°C heat all day.

Towing-Specific Additions

If you're towing a trailer or caravan, add: trailer wheel bearing condition, trailer brakes (if fitted), ball mount and hitch inspection, safety chains, and tyre condition on the trailer including the spare.

Turnaround Time

A full pre-trip inspection takes time to do properly. I can usually turn one around in 24–48 hours. Book in a week before you plan to leave — not the day before.
