Is Your Air Con Actually Working or Just Blowing Warm Air?
Alice Springs averages over 40°C for months at a stretch. On a bad day in January, we're hitting 47–48°C. In that environment, a failing air conditioner isn't just annoying — it's dangerous, especially with kids in the car or long trips in the pipeline.
I see it every week. Someone comes in saying the AC "doesn't seem as cold as it used to be." Half the time, it's been slowly degrading for months and they've just adapted to it. Don't adapt to it. Get it looked at.
Signs Your AC Is Underperforming
Takes 10+ minutes to start cooling properly — should be cold within a minute or two. Blows cool air but never gets properly cold — especially on the hottest days. Musty smell when you first turn it on — bacteria and mould in a dirty evaporator or cabin filter. A faint noise or clunk when the compressor kicks in — the compressor is working harder than it should.
What I Check
When you bring your rig in for an AC check, I go through the full system: refrigerant level , condenser condition , compressor function , and cabin air filter .
That last one catches people off guard. The cabin filter cleans the air coming into the cabin through the AC system. In Alice Springs dust, it can block up in a fraction of the normal service interval. A choked cabin filter means restricted airflow — and your AC works twice as hard for half the result.
AC Regas Explained
Refrigerant doesn't "run out" like fuel. But over time, seals and connections develop micro-leaks and the refrigerant level drops. A regas means evacuating the system, checking for leaks, and recharging it to the correct level. Most vehicles benefit from a regas every two years — but in the heat up here, I'd say don't push it much further than that.
Don't Wait for It to Die
If your AC is struggling, don't wait for it to fail completely in the middle of summer. That's not a good time to book a workshop appointment.
This isn't a comfort issue — it's a safety issue. Book an AC check now.
