DJ Says: Why I Check the Engine Before I Touch the DPF
What Actually Causes a DPF to Block
A DPF blocks when it accumulates more soot than it can burn off. That's normal — controlled regeneration deals with it. But when a DPF blocks repeatedly and rapidly, something is producing excessive soot. The filter is just the symptom. The cause is upstream.
The most common culprits I find:
Leaking injectors — an injector that's dripping fuel when it shouldn't be washes the cylinder walls, causes incomplete combustion, and pumps soot into the exhaust. If you're smelling diesel in your oil or the oil level has risen, that's a leaking injector until proven otherwise.
Stuck EGR valve — the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve recirculates exhaust back into the intake to reduce emissions. A stuck-open EGR floods the intake with exhaust gases, promotes carbon buildup, and disrupts combustion.
Worn piston rings — rings that can't seal properly allow oil to pass into the combustion chamber. Burning oil produces soot. Lots of it.
Split intercooler hose — a split hose means unmetered air enters the intake. The ECU compensates by adding fuel. Too much fuel, incomplete combustion, excessive soot.
Why Fixing the Wrong Thing Is Expensive
If I clean your DPF and the injector is still leaking, the filter will be blocked again in three months. You'll be back, paying again. I'm not interested in doing the same job twice. You shouldn't be either.
My Approach: Diagnose First
Before I recommend any work on a DPF, I run full engine diagnostics: fault codes, live data analysis, injector contribution tests, EGR function checks. I want to know what's causing the problem, not just treat the result.
Once the root cause is fixed, the DPF clean (if still needed) actually sticks.
Know What You're Fixing Before You Fix It
This is one of the things that separates a proper diagnostic workshop from a "clear the codes and send them home" operation. I'm not going to take your money for a job that won't hold. My reputation in this town is built on getting it right.
