DJ Says LandCruisers Are Tough — But They Have Weak Spots.

March 22, 2026

The LandCruiser Reality

Toyota LandCruisers are genuinely well-engineered vehicles. They're popular in Alice Springs because they work in conditions that destroy lesser vehicles.

But "tough" doesn't mean "maintenance-free". And in Central Australian conditions, even a LandCruiser has specific areas that need watching.

200 Series (2007–2021)

DPF: The 1VD-FTV V8 diesel has a DPF that is sensitive to short-trip driving. In Alice Springs, where a lot of driving is in-town, DPF blockage is common. The regen cycle is aggressive and the filter requires genuine maintenance attention.

Transfer case: The 200 Series transfer case is robust but benefits from regular fluid changes — more often than the logbook suggests in severe service conditions.

Front diff: Prone to seal weeps over high mileage, especially with heavy use. Worth checking regularly.

70 Series (The Workhorse)

Air filter: The older design air box on the 70 Series is less sealed than modern vehicles. In high-dust conditions, regular filter inspection is essential.

Leaf springs: Workhorse use means suspension wear is real. Sagging rear springs on a heavily loaded 70 Series affect handling and tyre wear significantly.

Brakes: The 70 Series doesn't have ABS as standard on older models. Brake condition and adjustment matters more when you don't have electronics assisting you.

Both Models

Wheel alignment after significant corrugated road use. Air conditioning system maintenance in dust. Battery health in extreme heat.

If you drive a LandCruiser in Alice Springs, bring it to a workshop that understands what you're putting it through. That's what we do.
