DJ Says Engine Oil Is the Cheapest Insurance You Have.
Oil Does More Than You Think
Engine oil lubricates. But it also cools, cleans, and protects. It carries heat away from bearings. It suspends contaminants and holds them until the next oil change. It protects metal surfaces from corrosion between uses.
As oil degrades — through heat, contamination, and oxidation — it does all of these things less effectively. Old oil isn't just less slippery; it's actively doing less of the work it's supposed to do.
Why Standard Intervals Don't Apply Here
Standard oil change intervals (often 10,000–15,000km) are designed for moderate conditions. In Alice Springs, your engine oil faces:
- Ambient temperatures up to 45°C (plus heat soak)
- Short-trip driving that prevents the oil from fully warming up and purging moisture
- High-dust environments that increase the rate of abrasive contamination
- Heavy loads and remote driving that push oil temperatures higher
Our recommendation: oil changes every 5,000–7,500km for most Alice Springs vehicles. More often if you do significant dirt road or towing kilometres.
Synthetic vs Mineral
In high-temperature conditions, full synthetic oil holds its viscosity better and provides better protection at operating temperature. The price difference is real but modest compared to the cost of an engine repair.
The Honest Maths
An oil change with quality synthetic oil: $120–180. An engine rebuild from bearing failure caused by degraded oil: $6,000–15,000.
Change your oil. Change it properly. Change it often enough.
