DJ Says Check It Before You Head Bush.
The Pre-Trip Reality Check
People spend weeks planning an outback trip. They book campsites, pack gear, sort the recovery kit. And then they drive out on tyres that haven't been checked in three months.
We see it every camping season. Vehicles that were fine for school runs that weren't ready for remote travel.
The Things That Actually Matter
Tyres
Pressure, tread depth, spare condition. Check them the day before you leave. Corrugated roads are hard on sidewalls — you want good rubber, correctly inflated.
Brakes
Pad depth and rotor condition. If you're towing, your brakes are working significantly harder. Make sure they're up to it.
Suspension
Any knocking, pulling, or instability should be sorted before you leave. Remote roads amplify every suspension problem.
Air Conditioning
Non-negotiable in Central Australia. Check it's working properly and the cabin is actually getting cold. A dust storm can block your condenser — if it happened recently, get it checked.
DPF (diesel vehicles)
Long highway runs are actually good for a diesel — they help the DPF regen. But if your filter is already partially blocked going in, a long trip may not be enough to clear it, and you could end up in limp mode at a bad time.
Cooling System
Check coolant level and condition. If you haven't flushed it in the last 2 years, do it before a summer trip.
Battery
Remote camps with fridges and accessories draw a lot. Make sure your battery and alternator are up to it.
The Rule
If you'd be uncomfortable with a problem 300km from town, fix it before you leave. Simple as that.
