DJ Says After a Dust Storm — Do This.
What a Dust Storm Does to Your Vehicle
A significant dust storm — the kind that turns day to night and leaves a red layer on everything — deposits fine particles into every gap, vent, and opening on your vehicle. Some of it is cosmetic. Some of it is operational.
Check These Within 24 Hours
Air Filter
Priority one. A major dust storm can load an air filter that was at 50% capacity to 100% in a single event. If you were driving during or shortly after the storm, the filter needs to be checked immediately. A blocked filter means your engine is breathing restricted air from this point forward.
Air Conditioning Condenser
The condenser is at the front of the vehicle and is effectively a fine mesh screen. After a dust storm, it can be significantly coated. Your AC will work harder for less result until it's cleaned. A compressed air blow-through is the fix — but do it properly, not just a spray with a garden hose.
Brakes
Dust in brake caliper slides causes increased friction in the sliding mechanism and uneven pad wear. Not immediately dangerous, but worth monitoring. If you notice any pulling under braking after a dust event, get it checked.
Engine Bay
Check for dust accumulation around electrical connectors and near the battery terminals. Fine conductive dust on battery terminals can increase self-discharge rates over time.
Underbody
If you were driving in the storm, check underneath for any areas where dust has packed into gaps or around components.
If It Was a Bad One
After a severe dust event, it's worth bringing the vehicle in for a quick check — particularly the air filter and AC system. Fifteen minutes of prevention can save you from a lot of follow-on problems.
